Let me tell you something. For a person that is extremely afraid of the supernatural, I have spent a large part of my life studying it. That didn't reduce the fear, of course. Instead, it created a strange and, at times, masochistic appeal. I openly admit that I wouldn't want to discover there's a ghost in my attic but I do want to learn everything about ghosts. There is, though, one supernatural creature whose appeal to me is greater than anything else and that is... the vampire. (I'd have no problem finding one of those in my attic!) Does it come as a surprise that my most favourite film of all is "Bram Stoker's Dracula"?
Yes, I know there have been better movies about vampires and I won't be the one to doubt Bella Lugosi and all the other classics but, call me an idiot, I love Gary Oldman with all my heart. He was the first image of a vampire I ever saw and I wouldn't change him for the world. Firstly, because he doesn't sparkle in the daylight (although, I have been infatuated with that kind for a while...) and more importantly, he doesn't want to be saved from what he is.
Coppola's Dracula (I'm not saying Stoker's because in the book, Dracula is completely different) is a "creature" -I'd rather call him a "man" but whatever- that enjoys his vampiric nature and still has the power to love. Love only that one woman but still... I believe that the best moment of the film is, when Dracula speaks to the "brides" and tells them he shall love again, even though his face doesn't look loving at all. That was the moment I fell in love for the very first time. ("I shall bother you no more" with my adoration for Gary Oldman.) Anthony Hopkins is magnificent, as well. That guy doesn't even have to say a word. All he has to do is look straight into the camera. That's all it takes!
Now, the film. Sure, it's long and there's not much action until the last half of it. But that is good! Because it builds up and the atmosphere it creates can actually creep inside your living room as you watch it. It makes me shiver a little bit and I'm not even afraid of vampires... The music adds to it, naturally. Great soundtrack. I, also, thought that the sets of London past, were... well, I thought they were cool. I may be odd but judge me not... I have seen this movie about 20 times and I still notice things that I hadn't the previous times and I can love it despite its -very few- flaws. Only now, people don't want to see it with me anymore because I recite the lines a lot.
As a conclusion, can I say that I was very disappointed by Keanu Reeves? I was. I have always known he isn't the fantastic actor everyone thinks him to be since they saw the Matrix but I could never believe he could be that bad! Seriously, Jonathan Harker isn't my favourite character in the book but this??? Come on! You could have done better, Keanu!
If you haven't seen Bram Stoker's Dracula yet, I pity you. Well, not literally. No wait... Literally. Go see the film!!! :)
(And also, this isn't over. I will write about vampires again. And Dracula. And Gary Oldman, possibly! Do you sense the subtle threat in my words?)
